OUR BELIEFS

OUR BELIEFS

Riverside stands in the historic Baptist tradition of Christian faith and spirituality. Here’s some of what that means:

Jesus Christ at The Center

We are defined by our affirmation of that Jesus Christ is at the center of our faith and action. We try our best, with the help of God’s ongoing presence and leadership, to live the two greatest commandments Jesus taught us: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.” This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.’ Matthew 22:37-40

Bible Freedom

We consider the Bible to be foundational to the life of the individual and church and that Christians. With the best and most scholarly tools of inquiry, we are both free and obligated to study the Bible and integrate what we learn into our lives.

We approach the Bible with a dynamic, rather than static, understanding and believe each person has unrestrained freedom to follow the Bible wherever it might lead.

Soul Freedom

Soul freedom, or soul liberty, is the historic Baptist affirmation of the inalienable right and responsibility of every person to deal with God without the imposition of creed, the interference of clergy, or the intervention of civil government. As a local church, we are free, with Christ at our center, to determine our membership and leadership, to order our worship and work, to ordain those we perceive as gifted for ministry, male or female, and to participate in the larger Body of Christ, of whose unity and mission Baptists are proudly a part.

Church Freedom

As a local church, we are free, with Christ at our center, to determine our membership and leadership, to order our worship and work, to ordain those we perceive as gifted for ministry, male or female, and to participate in the larger Body of Christ, of whose unity and mission Baptists are proudly a part.

Religious Freedom

We support and stand for freedom OF religion, freedom FOR religion, and freedom FROM religion. We stand alongside all – of any faith or no faith – in preserving their religious freedom.
